Surge2 Ideal-Essence-2
Surge3
The Order's two Surges: Gravitation (top left),

Division (bottom left) and Ideal/Essence.

Skybreakers are one of the ten Orders of Knights Radiant. Skybreakers share Surges with the Orders of Windrunners (Gravitation) and Dustbringers (Division). The Herald Nale is the patron of this Order.[1]

The Order's focus is upholding the rule of law, regardless of whether it is just or fair, and thus gained a reputation for being particularly unyielding. Skybreakers will obey the laws of a land regardless of whether it aligns with their specific goals, and if pursuing a target will only make an arrest or perform an execution if there are legal grounds for it under the laws of the land in which they happen to be.

Warning Book Spoiler: Significant plot details follow.

History

And thus were the disturbances in the Revv topiarchy quieted, when, upon their ceasing to prosecute their civil dissensions, Nalan'Elin be took himself to finally accept the Skybreakers who had named him their master, when initially he had spurned their advances and, in his own interests, refused to countenance that which he deemed a pursuit of vanity and annoyance; this was the last of the Heralds to admit such patronage.

–From Words of Radiance, chapter 5, page 17[1]

The considerable abilities of the Skybreakers for making such amounted to an almost divine skill, for which no specific Surge or spren grants capacity, but however the order came to such an aptitude, the fact of it was real and acknowledged even by their rivals.

–From Words of Radiance, chapter 28, page 3[2]

Characteristics

As stated above, the Skybreakers had considerable abilities for quelling disturbances amongst rival entities which amounted to almost divine skills.[2]

Known Skybreakers

It remains in question whether Szeth yet belongs to this Order, since being revived by Nale near the end of Words of Radiance, as he is not bonded with a spren.[3] Neither is it known whether he has spoken the First Ideal. It is implied that he has spoken the Second.[3] However, it very well might be that his bond with Nightblood - the Awakened sword from Warbreaker - given to him by Nale, affords him that bond.[3]

Immortal Words

The First Ideal

Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination.[4]

The Second Ideal

I will put the law before all else.[5]

Notes

Skybreakers were first revealed by Brandon in a Q&A.[6] When the Order was founded and took Nale as their Herald, Nale initially refused to take patronage of it. It was some time till Nale agreed to this.

Q&A with Brandon

Q: Are the Skybreakers kind of like the MPs of the KR?

A: Yes. That is actually a really good analogy.
