Location Jah Keved
Inhabitants Unkalaki

The Horneater Peaks are a range of high mountains located within - but apparently independent of - Jah Keved, and are the home of the Unkalaki (i.e., Horneaters). The Peaks are near Vedenar and sometimes the people there have red hair like the Horneaters. Rock indicates that they are cousins.[1]

Appearance[]

They are majestic, densely populated at their tips, with villages clustered near vents that emit steam or lava.[1]

Horneater Peaks
Fan art by Yen Shu Liao[1]

According to Rock, the Horneater Peaks are warm. Sigzil confirms this, saying that the peaks have hot springs to warm them. But Rock disputes this, saying that these are not springs, but small oceans, one for every peak. That the Horneater oceans are waters of life.[2]

The waters within the Peaks are a Shardpool.[3] Sigzil describes them thusly:

"The top of each mountain forms a kind of crater, which is filled with a large lake of warm water. The heat is enough to create a pocket of livable land, despite the altitude. Walk too far from one of the Horneater towns, though, and you'll end up in freezing temperatures and ice fields left by the highstorms."

–Sigzil to Bridge Four[2]

Rock further describes them:

"Is water of life. It is connection to gods. If Unkalaki swim in it, sometimes they see place of gods." Kaladin leaned forward at that. His mind had been drifting toward how to help Bridge Eighteen with their discipline problems. This struck him. "Place of the gods?" "Yes," Rock said. "Is where they live. The waters of life, they let you see place. In it, you commune with gods, if you are lucky."

–Rock to Kaladin[2]

When Lopen tells Rock that he'd like to go for a dip himself, Rock tells him that it is death to one not of his people. Sigzil responds by saying that swimming in the emerald pools is death to outsiders because Horneaters execute outsiders who touch them. Rock tells him that this is not true. Sigzil grumbles that they're just hot springs.[2]

At this, Rock rolls his eyes and states the following:

"On top, is water. Beneath, is not. Is something else. Water of life. The place of the gods. This thing is true."

–Rock to Sigzil[2]

Rock later recalls his homeland as a place of extremes: bitter ice, powdery snow, boiling heat, and blessed humidity.[4]

However, once reunited with his family, his wife tells him that there is something very wrong with the Peaks.[4]

From Shadesmar, Azure says that the perpendicularity in the Peaks is the only sure way back to Kholinar.[5]

Shallan says that the lighthouse keeper says he thinks something strange is happening there. That ships from that direction have never ended up arriving.[5]

Notes[]

It has been confirmed that the Shardpool on the Peaks can connect to Shadesmar - or to another world in the cosmere - due to Azure's account of her arrival on Roshar.[6]
