Demid was once Venli's mate. Demid and she had been scholars. They remain close, though their time as mates didn't produce children.[1][2]

If they'd gone to the battlefield, they'd have been a warpair. Instead, they were a researchpair, or something. The things they spent their days doing were very un-listener.[1]

He continues to back Venli in her assessments of the listener forms, who believes that forms of power are needed amongst the Parshendi to combat the potential return of the Surgebinders.

"Centuries ago," Demid said, "we escaped both our gods and the humans. Our ancestors left behind civilization, power, and might in order to secure freedom. I would not give that up, Eshonai. Stormform. With it, we can destroy the Alethi army."

–Demid to Eshonai[1]

"Our sacrifice was worthwhile," Demid told her to the Rhythm of Derision. "Yes, we have lost many, but humans sought our extinction. At least this way some of our people survived, and now we have great power!"

–Demid to Venli[2]

According to Demid, when he and Venli were in mateform, they had shared something. The silly, distracting passions were not ones they currently felt, nor were they something that any sane listener would desire. But the memories of them did create a bond.[2]

Demid was one of those sacrificed to resurrect the Fused by embracing the power of the Everstorm. He became Hariel and has one of the worst tempers of all the Fused.[3]

Appearance[]

After having embraced that power, Demid's clothing is in tatters, his well-muscled body isn't scored. He stands tall - far taller than Venli - with a broad chest and powerful stance. He seems more like a statue than a listener. He flexes, eyes glowing red, and his body pulses with a dark violet power - a glow that somehow evokes both light and darkness at once. It retreats, but Demid is pleased by his ability to invoke it.[3]

To Venli, he appears majestic, with ridges of carapace poking through his skin along the arms and at the corners of his face.[3]

He doesn't stand like her once-mate, or speak like him.[3]

Characteristics[]

He now speaks in a strange language that he shares with Melu, and his words seem to blur in Venli's mind, somehow shifting until she understands them.[3]
