The Order's two Surges: Tension (top left),

Adhesion (bottom left) and Ideal/Essence.

Bondsmiths are one of the ten Orders of Knights Radiant. Bondsmiths share Surges with the Orders of Stonewards (Tension) and Windrunners (Adhesion). Ishar is the patron of this Order.

But as for the Bondsmiths, they had members only three, which number was not uncommon for them; nor did they seek to increase this by great bounds, for during the times of Madasa, only one of their order was in continual accompaniment of Urithiru and its thrones. Their spren was understood to be specific, and to persuade them to grow to the magnitude of the other orders was seen as seditious.

–From Words of Radiance, chapter 16, page 14[1]

So Melishi retired to his tent, and resolved to destroy the Voidbringers upon the next day, but that night did present a different stratagem, related to the unique abilities of the Bondsmiths; and being hurried, he could make no specific account of his process; it was related to the very nature of the Heralds and their divine duties, an attribute the Bondsmiths alone could address.

–From Words of Radiance, chapter 30, page 18[2]

As indicated above, the Bondsmiths numbered up to only three at any time. Due to the specifics of their spren, they had unique abilities.[1]

Those Bondsmiths bonded to the Stormfather are forbidden the use of those Shardblades that are actually dead spren.[3]

During the 4/23 & 24/16 JordanCon8 Q&A, Brandon obliquely addressed that all Bondsmiths do not bond to the Stormfather.

Q&A with BrandonEdit

Q. Before the Recreance there were three Bondsmiths. Did they all bond supersprens, or is Dalinar an exception?

A. They did something similar.[5]
